2. Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids represent a class of steroid hormones that are naturally produced in our adrenal cortex; they are involved in a wide range of physiologic systems, such as immune response, stress response, regulation of inflammation and carbohydrate metabolism and protein catabolism and even our behavior, for example.
As we’ve already said before, although they are tiny, apparently insignificant parts of our body, hormones have a very important role. They are involved within our body’s normal growth and development and within all our body’s highly sensitive mechanisms that are silently and continually take place inside us, clockwork.
That is why in some cases, when hormones become imbalanced within our bodies, the physician asks us to start “taking hormones”. In fact we start taking synthetic drugs with hormone-like effects. These medications involve very amazing results and this is why they are always likely to feature severe side effects.
This also the case of the so-called corticosteroids; they are nothing else but drugs that are used for a variety of different conditions that range from brain tumors to skin diseases.
Unfortunately, in some cases it is the corticosteroids that lead to the skin disease called acne.
Similarly to the natural steroids from our bodies, the corticosteroids might stimulate the sebum production and lead to skin blemishes and acne breakouts. Corticosteroids are used for treating asthma and other chronic lung diseases among others.
