Anticonvulsants are sometimes known also as antiepileptics because they are mainly prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and other kinds of similar seizures.
Anticonvulsants are also used more and more in treating also the bipolar disorder, because many of them appeared to act also as mood stabilizers.
The target of an anticonvulsant is to suppress the rapid and excessive firing of the neurons from the sufferer’s head that start the epileptic seizure and thus prevent the spread of seizure within people’s brains and offer protection against possible excitotoxic effects that may cause also brain damage.
However, most medications from this family list acne as a common side-effect, among others.
